چکیده

This paper discusses the issues which arise when combining multigrid strategies with adaptive meshing techniques for solving steady-state problems on unstructured meshes. A basic strategy is described, and demonstrated by solving several inviscid and viscous ow cases. Potential ine ciencies in this basic strategy are exposed, and various alternate approaches are discussed, some of which are demonstrated with an example. Although each particular approach exhibits certain advantages, all methods have particular drawbacks, and the formulation of a completely optimal strategy is considered to be an open problem. This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA Contract No. NAS1-19480 while the author was in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-0001.

Recent Developments for Efficient 3d Space Charge Computations Based on Adaptive Multigrid Discretizations∗

Efficient and accurate space-charge computations are essential for the design of high-brightness charged particle sources. Recently a new adaptive meshing strategy based on multigrid was implemented in GPT and the capabilities were demonstrated. This new meshing scheme uses the solution of an intermediate step in the multigrid algorithm itself to define optimal mesh line positions. In this pape...

Multigrid Techniques for Unstructured Meshes

An overview of current multigrid techniques for unstructured meshes is given. The basic principles of the multigrid approach are first outlined. Application of these principles to unstructured mesh problems is then described, illustrating various different approaches, and giving examples of practical applications. Advanced multigrid topics, such as the use of algebraic multigrid methods, and th...

An adaptive multigrid approach for the simulation of contaminant transport in the 3D subsurface

This paper presents an adaptive multigrid approach, combining adaptive local grid refinement and multigrid methods, in conjunction with the Lagrangian–Eulerian finite element method to simulate contaminant transport in the 3D subsurface. Adaptive local grid refinement can improve solution accuracy without sacrificing computational efficiency because computer efforts are focused on the rough reg...

Adaptive Space-charge Meshing in the General Particle Tracer Code

Efficient and accurate space-charge calculations are essential for the design of high-brightness charged particle sources. Space-charge calculations in the General Particle Tracer (GPT) code make use of an efficient multigrid Poisson solver developed for non-equidistant meshes at Rostock University. GPT uses aggressive mesh-adaptation with highly non-equidistant spacing to speed up calculation ...

Upper and lower bounds in limit analysis: Adaptive meshing strategies and discontinuous loading

Upper and lower bounds of the collapse load factor are here obtained as the optimum values of two discrete constrained optimization problems. The membership constraints for VonMises and Mohr–Coulomb plasticity criteria are written as a set of quadratic constraints, which permits one to solve the optimization problem using specific algorithms for Second-Order Conic Program (SOCP). From the stres...
